Josephine Liu Moerschel, DMA

Violist Josephine Liu Moerschel is an active freelance musician in Los Angeles, where she performs with groups such as the Los Angeles Opera, Opera Pacific, New West Symphony Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, and the Pacific Symphony, with whom she went on tour to Europe in 2006.


She has played in music festivals spanning the US, including the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival, Buzzards Bay Music Festival, the Sunflower Festival, and the Hot Springs Music Festival. She recently performed with Andrea Bocelli during his United States tour in December 2007.


Josephine is also a highly respected teacher, working with violin and viola students ranging from the age of 5 through high school. She is a faculty member of Elemental Strings, a youth orchestra for elementary school students. In addition to being a chamber music coach for Junior Chamber Music, Josephine will also be Associate Director of the Los Angeles branch this fall. She has been on faculty at the Austin Chamber Music Center and the internationally-recognized Starling String Project at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.


Josephine holds a doctorate in viola performance from the University of Texas at Austin. Her teachers include Donald McInnes, Roger Myers, and Masao Kawasaki.


In her free time, Josephine enjoys watching movies, reading, walking on the beach and spending time with her husband, Jonathan Moerschel, violist of the Calder Quartet. They, along with their dog Frankie, cockatiel Kyle, and cats Ella and Louie, lead a very happy life near Santa Monica, filled with good friends, and great music making.
