Meet the Musicians

Alex Klein

Oboe

Alex Klein, a Grammy Award-winning oboist, began his journey in music at the age of 9 in Brazil before advancing his studies at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music. His remarkable tenure as Principal Oboe with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Daniel Barenboim was marked with critical acclaim, earning him the title of Oboe Emeritus Soloist from Riccardo Muti in 2017. Despite facing challenges with Musician’s Focal Dystonia that led to his temporary departure from the Chicago Symphony, Klein's passion for music saw him promoting young talents from Latin America and disadvantaged communities through the founding of significant music festivals and social inclusion programs.

After overcoming the obstacles posed by focal dystonia and re-auditioning for his former position, Klein's return to the Chicago Symphony was celebrated as a significant classical music comeback. Currently serving as an oboe professor at DePaul University, Klein continues to influence the music world through teaching and performing at renowned festivals, along with adjudicating at international competitions. His discography includes numerous acclaimed recordings with the Chicago Symphony, as a soloist, and in chamber settings, with his recent work on 20th Century Sonatas for oboe and piano receiving a Grammy nomination and high praise from critics, underscoring his status as a leading figure in the oboe community.
