JoAnn Falletta

Conductor

Multiple Grammy Award-winning conductor JoAnn Falletta serves as Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Connie and Marc Jacobson Music Director Laureate of the Virginia Symphony. She is also the Principal Guest Conductor of the Brevard Music Center and Conductor Laureate of the Hawaii Symphony. Recently named one of the “Fifty Great Conductors,” past and present, by Gramophone Magazine, Falletta is celebrated for her work as a conductor, recording artist, audience builder, and champion of American composers. Under her leadership, the Buffalo Philharmonic has achieved national and international prominence, becoming one of the leading recording orchestras for Naxos.

Falletta has an impressive discography of over 135 titles. She has won two individual Grammy Awards, including the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance for the Naxos recording of Richard Danielpour’s "The Passion of Yeshua," and the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Classical Compendium for "Spiritualist," with the London Symphony. Her Naxos recording of John Corigliano’s "Mr. Tambourine Man" received two Grammys in 2008. Her recordings with the Buffalo Philharmonic have also achieved critical acclaim, including the prestigious Diapason d’Or Award.

In early 2024, Naxos released the Buffalo Philharmonic’s recordings of works by Zoltán Kodály, Alexander Scriabin, and more. Other recordings include works by Danny Elfman, Adolphus Hailstork, and a variety of American composers. Falletta’s most recent recording, featuring the music of Danny Elfman with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, was released on Sony. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Falletta has also served on the National Council on the Arts under the George W. Bush and Obama administrations.

Falletta is recognized as a strong advocate for young musicians and has led seminars for women conductors. She established a collaboration with the Buffalo Philharmonic and Mannes College to help aspiring conductors gain professional experience. Her work with young musicians includes guest conducting at top conservatories and festivals such as Tanglewood, Round Top, and Brevard Music Center.

Throughout her career, Falletta has held esteemed positions, including Principal Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra and Music Director of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, among others. She earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from The Juilliard School. Outside of her professional life, JoAnn enjoys playing classical guitar, writing, cycling, yoga, and reading.
