Jonathan Gunn

Clarinet

Jonathan Gunn, acclaimed for his versatile artistry, has built a varied career as an educator, soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer. Initially joining the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra as Associate Principal and Eb Clarinet in 2004 under Maestro Paavo Jarvi, Gunn advanced to Principal Clarinet from 2011 to 2016, having previously held the position of Principal Clarinetist with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. His notable engagements include performances as Guest Principal Clarinet with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Houston Grand Opera, and appearances at esteemed music festivals like Tanglewood, Aspen, and Sunflower. As a distinguished soloist, Gunn has performed with orchestras including the Cincinnati Pops, the Wheeling Symphony, and at international venues in Thailand, Taiwan, and Canada.

Dedicated to nurturing emerging talent, Gunn is a respected educator, conducting masterclasses worldwide and holding faculty positions at prestigious institutions such as the Buffet-Crampon Summer Academy and the National Youth Orchestra of the USA. He is currently an Associate Professor of Clarinet at the Butler School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin. Gunn's discography spans recordings with the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops Orchestras, solo albums of French clarinet repertoire, and the Corigliano Clarinet Concerto with the University of Texas Wind Ensemble. Endorsed by D’Addario and Buffet Group USA, Gunn exclusively plays Buffet-Crampon clarinets, showcasing his commitment to excellence in every performance.
